Origin of the term: The translation of Muhammed al-Chwarizmi’s (780-850) works on arithmetic with Indian numerals inspired mathematicians to create the modern term of Algorithm.
Al-Chwarizmi was a polymath coming from Chorismi in Uzbekistanworked and worked later at the House of Wisdom in Bagdad. He introduced the Indian numerals including the decimal position and the numeral 0 in Arabic mathematics.
His mathematical works were translated to Latin and got known in Renaissance Europe through the book Dixit Algorismi. The book’s title leaded to the creation of the term algorithm. His book on the mathematical operations Al-Gabr helped creating modern Algebra.
Al Chwarizmi calculated the dimensions of our planet Earth and drew the first map of the world as known in his times.
